District Acceptable Use Policy

Letter to Parents of Westbrook ISD Students

 August 2007 thru June 2008

Westbrook ISD

Dirk D Dykstra, Director of Technology

Dear Parents,

Your child has an opportunity to be given access to the District’s electronic network and communications system and needs your permission to do so. Your child will be able to access programs and network resources on our local network, communicate with other schools, colleges, organizations, and individuals around the world through the Internet and use other electronic information systems/networks, including distance learning.

The Internet is a network of networks. Through the District’s electronic communications system, your child will have access to hundreds of databases, libraries, and computer services all over the world. With this educational opportunity also comes responsibility. It’s important that you and your child read the enclosed District policy, administrative regulations, and agreement form and discuss these requirements together. Inappropriate system use will result in the loss of the privilege to use this educational tool.

Please note that the Internet is an association of diverse communication and information networks. It is possible that your child may run across areas of adult content and some material you might find objectionable. While the District will take reasonable steps to preclude access to such material and does not condone such access, it is not possible for us to absolutely prevent such access.

Internet safety is important to the District. Many experts point to chat rooms as the source of most Internet related dangers to children, so we do not allow chat room use. We also ask parents to review the safety suggestions on our web site, www.westbrookisd.com.

Our web site is a valuable source of information. We encourage you to review the information and submit corrections along with items you wish displayed. While we encourage the use of the web site, we also promote safety. Read the Web Page permission form carefully for our recommendations and choose the selection that best suits your family. Feel free to contact me with any questions and/or comments.

Please return the attached agreement form(s) indicating your permission or denial of permission for your child to participate in the various components of the District’s electronic network and communications system.

Sincerely,

Dirk D Dykstra
